Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and Google's India-born CEO Sundar Pichai are among over 50 global leaders, business chiefs and pop icons named as contenders by Time magazine for its annual 'Person of the Year' honour.
Yes, what you read is right! The race for ‘Time Person of the Year 2015’ is in its final mile and three Indians are in contention for the top spot including PM Narendra Modi, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Mukesh Ambani. Every year the title is owed to the person who "most influenced the news, for better or worse".
Time said Modi has "encouraged foreign direct investment in India and is trying to modernize the world's largest democracy", but added that the Indian leader has also "faced controversy over what some see as right-wing extremism".
On Ambani, Time said the richest person in India is the chairman of Reliance Industries "which owns everything from telecom properties to the world's largest crude oil refinery".
"After 11 years at Google, most recently as co-founder Larry Page's right hand, Pichai assumed the tech giant's top job," Time said.
TIME’s editors will choose the Person of the Year, but that doesn't mean readers shouldn’t have their say. People can cast their vote for the person they think most influenced the news this year for better or worse.
This year, Bernie Sanders leads the race with 13.1% of the votes. The second person is Malala Yousafzai with 4.9% of the votes. Modi on the other hand is the highest gainer in the list securing 1.3% of the votes. He is in the same bracket a Sundar Pichai and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ambani has garnered a mere 0.2% of the votes cast.
Lets Vote for the Person of the Year,2015 the results will be out in the month of December. Voting closes at 11:59 PM on December 4, and the combined winner of the reader polls will be announced on December 7. TIME’s Person of the Year will be announced on December 9, 2015.
